Hat trick: Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles top the table three times

Mercedes-Benz trucks: “Trucks you can trust” promise corroborated

Unanimous vote for Mercedes-Benz vans

Mercedes-Benz CharterWay honoured for the fourth time in a row as a unique commercial vehicle service provider

Stuttgart/Munich – Mercedes-Benz is Germany's most popular commercial vehicle brand. This is the finding of an Emnid study commissioned by the weekly specialist magazine Verkehrs-Rundschau. In the "Verkehrs-Rundschau Image-Ranking 2009” the opinion research institute investigated for the fourth year the perception of the leading commercial vehicle brands. Mercedes-Benz took first place in three of the seven categories: Trucks, Vans and the category Hire/Leasing.
Customers and non-customers alike attribute to the truck with the star cutting-edge technology, the best equipment, the lowest fuel consumption and the greatest reliability. All of these aspects are expressed in the Mercedes-Benz performance promise "Trucks you can trust".
Mercedes-Benz vans left the competition trailing far behind them in the "Verkehrs-Rundschau-Image-Ranking 2009", just like last year. Of particular note is the rate of willingness to recommend, at 82.1 % absolutely outstanding.

For the fourth time in a row, Mercedes-Benz CharterWay took the top step on the podium for service provision. In the category Leasing and Hire the unique commercial vehicle service provider was honoured for the competence and engagement of its advisors.
To compile the "Verkehrs-Rundschau Image-Ranking", the opinion research institute TNS Emnid polled in autumn 2008 a total of 400 fleet managers in transport, freight, industry and trade about the image of the most important commercial vehicle providers and about products and services for the commercial vehicle fleet.

A good image is a basic precondition for a purchase decision. According to the Verkehrs-Rundschau study, over 75 % of those questioned would never or only exceptionally purchase commercial vehicles, products or services from a provider with a poor image.

Metrobus project in Istanbul wins a USA award
Stuttgart, Jan 30, 2009

  • Sustainable Transport Award in Washington D.C. in recognition of the sustainable transport concept of the city of Istanbul

  • Mercedes-Benz CapaCity offers solutions for innovative transport concepts

The Metrobus project of the Istanbul administration authority was recently given an award during the presentation of the Sustainable Transport Awards in Washington D.C. This award is presented to projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the quality of life in the inner areas of major cities worldwide.

In its award citation the jury emphasised that Istanbul has played a pioneering role versus other, comparable major cities with its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) concept, which went into operation in 2007. The BRT line originally ran from the suburb of Avcilar in the north-west of Istanbul to Topkapi in the city centre, and in 2008 a further connection was added between Topkapi and Zincirlikuyu in view of the service’s widespread acceptance. This additional stretch extended the originally 17-kilometre long route to a length of 29 kilometres. The buses travel on their own roadways at an average speed of 40 km/h, and shorten the daily travel time from 1.5 hours to 40 minutes. Each day the BRT system carries more than 530,000 passengers, which means 70,000 to 80,000 fewer individual journeys in the dense city traffic of this major Turkish metro polis. Per passenger, a regular service bus such as the CapaCity consumes between 0.3 and 0.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, and thereby makes a significant contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions. The much-discussed level of CO2 emissions directly depends on fuel consumption.

Mercedes-Benz CapaCity offers solutions for innovative transport concepts

150 CapaCity buses supplied by EvoBus GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG, from the Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim have so far formed the backbone of the Bus Rapid Transit line in Istanbul. A further 100 CapaCity buses were ordered for the city of Istanbul by the transport operator Istanbul Elektrik Tramvay ve Tünel Isletmelerie (IETT) at the end of 2008. As in Istanbul, the CapaCity is able to provide answers to many urban public transport problems in other regions as well. It concentrates the transport capacity on the major routes, while reducing fuel, driver, workshop and capital costs. As a high-capacity vehicle not restricted to on-rail operation, the CapaCity combines the typical advantages of the series production city buses, i.e. great flexibility and high cost-effectiveness, with the attributes of a tram system. By virtue of its cost-effective ness, high passenger capacity of 193 and low infrastructure costs, it is an ideal component for innovative BRT transport systems.

The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) was founded in 1985 for the encouragement of environmentally and socially compatible transport concepts worldwide. It cooperates with urban authorities and local interest groups to implement projects aimed at fighting poverty, environmental pollution and dependence on crude oil.

" The mobility requirements of a major metropolis such as Istanbul are enormous. Only an optimal combination of the infrastructure and the vehicle fleet is able to guarantee the best possible transport performance, as the BRT project is already demonstrating today ", says Holger Suffel, Daimler Buses Vice President, Service & Parts.

Top Safety Pick 2009: Key reason to buy: The Mercedes-Benz C-Class gains top marks in US safety test
Stuttgart, Dec 08, 2008

Stuttgart - The respected Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States has named the Mercedes-Benz C-Class one of its Top Safety Picks for 2009 – the best reason to buy in terms of safety. The C-Class achieved good ratings in all the safety criteria which were examined.

Each year, the experts at the IIHS rate new vehicle models based on stringent safety criteria, thereby providing an important tool to help buyers make a decision. In the latest assessments, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class was subjected to front and side crash tests. The safety specialists in the USalso evaluated protection against neck injuries in rear impacts. For all three criteria, the C-Class was awarded top marks.

This result is confirmation that the C-Class safety concept, optimised based on the analysis of real-life accidents, also performs extremely well in standardised rating crash tests. With seven airbags, belt tensioners, belt force limiters and NECK PRO crash-responsive head restraints fitted as standard, the Saloon offers its occupants an extremely high level of protection should an accident occur. The body structure has been designed to ensure that, in the event of a frontal collision, the impact forces are distributed over a wide area and on four independently acting impact levels, meaning that the passenger compartment remains largely undamaged. Around 70 percent of all the bodyshell panels are made from state-of-the-art, high-strength steel alloys that minimise weight and maximise safety.

Furthermore, the C-Class is the world's only car in this market segment to feature an anticipatory occupant protection system in the shape of PRE-SAFE® as an option. This Mercedes-Benz innovation uses the time between detection of a potential accident situation and a possible collision to initiate preventive protective measures, thus reducing the loads exerted on the occupants in the event of a crash by up to 40 percent.

By rating the C-Class a Top Safety Pick 2009, the IIHS has confirmed the vehicle's extremely good performance in crash tests conforming to Euro NCAP (the European New Car Assessment Programme) in which the C-Class was awarded five stars, making it one of the safest cars on the market.

Mercedes-Benz wins two golds and a silver at the ADAM and EVA Awards
Stuttgart/Bochum, Nov 17, 2008

Stuttgart/Bochum – Mercedes-Benz was honoured last Friday with two golds at the ADAM and EVA Awards. The Stuttgart based carmaker won the coveted EVA Award in gold in the category "Corporate Events" for the world premiere of the CLC Sports Coupé at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. In the "XXL over 1,500 m2" category, the "Road to the Future" trade fair stand at the IAA 2007 received a gold ADAM, a coveted German trade fair communications award.

The world premiere of the CLC took place in January, 2008 at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. During the fashion performance, models have been showed in animated design sketches and were linked to the new design of the CLC. As highlight two Mercedes-Benz CLC vehicles were presented on the runway. The presentation of the Sports Coupé showed the connection between fashion and automobile design. The jury praised the Bonn agency Pleon Event & Sponsoring for the "outstanding analogy between fashion creation and automobile design." "It was an intelligent presentation that successfully conveyed a link between a virtual and a real world. The message: design is universal", concluded the jury.

Mercedes-Benz also received gold for its trade fair stand "Road to the Future" at the IAA 2007. The Stuttgart based carmaker was honoured with the ADAM Award in the category "XXL over 1,500 m²". The key element was a so-called "carwalk". In line with the theme "fascination and responsibility", Mercedes-Benz presented a wide array of new, very fuel-efficient and clean-running models with intelligently combined drive technologies. The surrounding three-story brand world with the area "TecTalk" where visitors received information on technological innovations and drive system solutions from Mercedes-Benz complemented the concept. "The trade fair stand again met visitors' expectations," said the jury. They praised the emotional brand world as being "in a class of its own." The firm Kauffmann Theilig & Partner was responsible for the trade show architecture, and Atelier Markgraph was in charge of the media presentation.

In addition, another project of the Stuttgart based carmaker received an award. In the "Consumer Events" category the “smart test drive” won the silver EVA Award. At busy urban locations in 13 German cities, some 3,000 passersby spontaneously took a test drive to find out about the advantages of the smart in terms of fuel efficiency and manoeuvrability.

The winners were picked by an interdisciplinary jury consisting of leading experts in event and trade fair communications and top representatives from industry, science and the media. All in all, the jury examined nearly 200 competition entries. Every year, the Marketing Event Agency Forum presents the EVA Awards in honour of outstanding marketing events and live promotional campaigns. The prizes for the ADAM awards are conferred by the Trade Show and Exhibition Forum.

Affalterbach – The well-known American technical magazine "Popular Science" has made an award to the newly developed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. During the "Best of what’s new Awards", the innovative power transfer of the SL 63 AMG high-performance Roadster achieved first place in the "Automotive" category.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission was able to claim victory in the hotly contested "Automotive" category. According to the editors of Popular Science, this AMG transmission represents "important and revolutionary technological progress". Popular Science has presented its sought-after "Best of what’s new Awards" annually in eleven categories since 1987. A total of 100 products enter the final selection. The results are published in the December edition, which traditionally has the largest circulation. Popular Science is the world's most widely-read science and technology magazine, with an average readership of 6.8 million each month.

The AMGSPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission is a newly developed and unique power transfer unit that is used exclusively in the new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG. It combines the best of both worlds: the sporty, direct and agile responsiveness of a manual transmission and the maximum comfort of an automatic transmission. Equipped with seven gears, four driving modes, a double-declutch function and a RACE START function, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission excels with previously unattained flexibility. MCT stands for Multi-Clutch Technology, and indicates that gearchanges are executed solely by the clutch components.

No interruption in tractive power and four driving modes

The centrepiece of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission is the wet start-off clutch, which operates in a sump and replaces the previous torque converter. Thanks to its low rotational inertia, this transmission is extremely responsive and dynamic, with movements of the accelerator immediately translated into motive power. Equipped with four driving modes, the transmission shifts the gears with no interruption in tractive power and provides tailor-made shift strategies for maximum driving pleasure. In "C" mode the gearchanges are comfort-oriented, with "soft" accelerator mapping for extremely smooth progress. In "S" mode the engine and transmission respond much more immediately, with more revs in each gear and faster downshifts. Gearshifts are also around 20 percent faster than in "C". Changing to driving mode "S+" shortens this time by a further 20 percent, while "M" provides the most sporty mode of all: now the 6.3-litre AMGV8-engine responds more sharply, and the transmission shifts the gears 10 percent faster – corresponding to a 50 reduction versus "C" mode. In "M" mode the gearchanges take only 100 milliseconds.

Particularly fast and responsive multiple downshifts are another major attribute of the AMG MCT sports transmission. Kickdown alows the driver to change from seventh directly to fourth gear, for example, or from fifth to second gear. In driving modes "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual) the automatic double-declutch function is active. This is not only a benefit in terms of the driver's emotional experience: the practically load-free downshifts minimise any load-change responses, which has an extremely positive effect when braking into bends on the racetrack.

AMG DRIVE UNIT with innovative RACE START function

The central control unit for the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and all the dynamic functions is the AMG DRIVE UNIT. The electronic rotary switch for selection of the driving modes, including activation of the innovative RACE START function, is located to the left of the shift lever. Below this there are three keys for other functions: the first controls the ESP® system, the second the ABC suspension and the third, which bears AMGlettering, enables the driver to store the selected driving mode and the suspension setup. Briefly depressing the AMG key displays the configuration options, and longer pressure saves the preferred setups to memory.

The RACE START function opens up new dimensions in driving dynamics: it enables the driver of the SL 63 AMG to summon up the maximum acceleration potential while ensuring the best possible traction for the drive wheels. The optimal start-off engine speed is set fully automatically to give the SL 63 AMG the fastest possible acceleration – if required even to maximum speed. The driver does not need to perform manual gearshifts, as the AMG transmission changes the gears with the shortest possible shift times.

Most powerful roadster in its class with 386 kW/525 hp

Emotional performance courtesy of a technological masterpiece: the Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG. This high-performance roadster is powered by the 6.3-litre AMGV8-engine developing 386 kW/525 hp and 630 newton metres – which makes it the most powerful model with a naturally aspirated V8-engine in its class. The SL 63 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and has an (electronically limited) top speed of 250 km/h. Its unique combination of a high-revving concept and a large displacement represents the best of both worlds: high torque at low engine speeds combined with flexibility to set the pulse racing – a maximum of 7200 rpm is possible.

The AMG eight-cylinder engine features a wealth of technology adopted from motor sports: this includes the lightweight, particularly rigid closed-deck crankcase and cylinder walls with revolutionary LDS coating, as well as valve gear designed for high engine speeds with bucket-type tappets in the cylinder heads. Together with the variable intake manifold with two integrated throttle flaps, the flow-optimised intake and exhaust ducts ensure perfect cylinder charging and a high output.
This dynamic drive package is ideally matched by the suspension of the SL 63 AMG. The AMGsports suspension based on Active Body Control has been refined, and now features not only a new damper configuration but also completely revised elasto-kinematics. In the interests of greater agility and shorter braking distances, the front axle bearings, spring links and the radius rod , as well as individual strut bearings at the rear axle, have been reconfigured. Together with the improved, speed-sensitive power steering this makes the SL 63 AMG more directly responsive, with extremely precise, linear self-steering characteristics. The AMGsports suspension based on Active Body Control also allows a personal suspension setup. At the touch of a button either sporty characteristics with reduced roll angles and a stiff suspension setup, or a comfort-oriented setting for a high level of long-distance comfort can be selected.

The 3-stage ESP® with sports function is also unique. This system offers three
different control settings, and is a logical further development of the AMG ESP® philosophy. Using the ESP® key in the AMG DRIVE UNIT, the driver is able to choose between three modes – "ESP ON", "ESP SPORT" and "ESP OFF" – and the currently active mode is shown in the central display of the AMG instrument cluster.

Conventional automatic transmissions shift too lazily for true car nerds, but most paddle-shifted automated manuals tend to feel herky-jerky around town. Mercedes’s AMG Speedshift combines the best of both worlds in a lightweight, compact package. It replaces a standard automatic’s torque converter with a series of interlocking clutch plates, which allow faster shifting than even a professional racecar driver can pull off. During our test in the powerful SL 63 AMG convertible, equipped with the seven-speed shifter, even the most diehard manual fan among us had to admit that if this is where automatics are headed, he can deal.
